About AHGSA and artechne

AHGSA (the Art History Graduate Student Association) formed in the Fall of 2006 to support the continued growth of the M.A. and PhD programs in Art History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Whether a new or continuing student, AHGSA is here to help. Our programming is designed to help make the transition to graduate school a smooth and comfortable one and ensure that you get the most out of your time as a UIC graduate student.

Representing diverse academic interests and backgrounds, AHGSA provides a forum for students to address administrative issues and share in scholarly research and pedagogical development. AHGSA facilitates art historical inquiry and research through such diverse programs as Brown Bag/Works In Progress (WIP) series for the presentation of student work and the facilitation of ideas, a professional development series, question and answer sessions for both M.A. and PhD students, film series, trips to local and regional museums, as well as various social and recreational events.

Why artechne?

From the intersection of modern high art and Classic Greek techne emerges artechne – the collapse of chronology and distance, the blurring of boundaries and the creation of connections between diverse disciplines. Artechne is thus an arena where Art History and Visual Culture can converse.
